BOTOX SCIENCE

Botox toxin acts by binding to receptors on the muscle thus preventing or blocking stimulation of the muscle. It was first used medically to treat children with certain eye conditions caused by a persistent spasm of eye muscles resulting in double vision.

Botox is now an established treatment for these conditions (known as strabismus or nystagmus) and is being used for a variety of other conditions involving persistent muscle spasm or contraction. The first cosmetic use of Botox was described in 1992.

Botox received FDA approval for cosmetic application late in 2002.
