1. STAY OUT OF THE SUN.

Since some sun exposure in Texas is inevitable it is important to wear sunscreen on a daily basis. For daily wear SPF 15 should be adequate but if you plan to be out for a prolonged period of time wear SPF 30 or higher.

One way to incorporate this into your routine is by finding a moisturizer with a sunscreen or using a sunscreen as a moisturizer. If you are relying on your makeup alone for photoprotection it probably is not adequate even if does contain a sunscreen. The reason is that most people apply much less than is necessary to provide a SPF of 15.

When choosing a sunscreen the most important factor is that you find it cosmetically acceptable so that you wear it. If you have sensitive skin consider a chemical free sunscreen that contains titanium dioxide. Some examples would be Clinique’s Special Defense Sunscreen SPF 25, PreSun’s chemical free sunscreen as well as MD Forte's aftercare sunscreen (carried in our office).

If you have oily skin you may prefer gels to creams such as Pre-Sun Ultra gel or a variety of other gels on the market. Use sunscreens that block both UVA and UVB rays. One of the best sunscreens to do this is one called PARSOL 1789. It is available in three products currently: Ombrelle SPF 15 and SPF 30 (the SPF 30 will be available soon), Pre-Sun Ultra SPF 30 (comes as a gel or a cream), and Coppertone’s Shade UVA Guard SPF 15. Any of the creams could be used as a moisturizer to simplify your morning routine.

Hats are also advisable if you are going to be in the sun for extended periods of time. There is a company that makes clothes and hats specifically designed for aggressive photoprotection and we would be happy to supply you with one of their brochures.

2. DON"T SMOKE.

This probably should be listed as #1 B as sun and smoking are two factors that will cause your skin to age very prematurely.
